Irvine, Calif. – (March 23, 2010) – MBK Senior Living “Diabetes Wellness Program” has been named a “2010 Best of the Best Award” winner by the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA). Awarded to those who have demonstrated high-quality resident care and operational excellence, MBK’s Diabetes Wellness Program is currently the only one offered in the senior living industry, with a dedicated focus on diabetes. More than eight million seniors in the United States have diabetes; however, most senior living communities are unable to cover insulin administration 24 hours a day. As a result, most communities must refuse admittance to diabetic seniors or even evict residents who have become insulin dependent. MBK’s Diabetes Wellness Program was developed to open the door to diabetic seniors, help residents better manage their illness, and ultimately improve quality of life. “We are truly honored that our Diabetes Wellness Program has been recognized by ALFA for delivering quality resident-centered care,” said Terry Howard, president of MBK Senior Living. “Establishing and extending valuable programming is paramount to our company’s mission to exceed the care expectations of those we serve.”
As part of the multifaceted program, residents receive a guide to understanding and managing diabetes, and monthly diabetic education and evaluation. The program encourages sound dietary choices, exercise, stress reduction, as well as open communication with their physician for medical guidance. In addition, the program includes the availability of nurses for routine check-ups and insulin injections for residents unable to self-administer. Since the program’s inception last year, residents participating in MBK’s Diabetes Wellness Program have stabilized glucose levels, realized better blood sugar levels, and have more energy, improved flexibility and greater self confidence. Additionally, MBK has retained 100% of insulin dependent residents (in the past they would have been discharged to higher level care facilities) and there has been a 50% reduction in diabetic complications such as diabetic foot ulcers.
“Through education, encouragement and sensible solutions, our Diabetes Wellness Program has helped our residents take control of their diabetes, has reduce their chances of developing complications, and is enabling them to live healthy, active lives,” said Howard.
